Original ballpoint pen drawing of an octopus on an original 1983 Godfrey Edition (second edition) of a 1894 Ordnance Survey map of Rotherhithe, London, UK.
On a gloomy winter’s morning I went for a potter around a local town which has a lot of antique, vintage and retro shops and came across a few reproduction old Ordnance Survey maps and had to buy them. I have a bit of a weakness for old books and maps like some women have for shoes.
At the time I had no idea what I was going to do with them, but soon inspiration struck for a similar work – Peckham Raven. I wanted to draw an aquatic creature of some kind to tie in with the old nautical theme of the map and legends of the Kraken sprang to mind, though I doubt there were ever any sightings in the Thames!
It was quite nerve wracking at first and I felt guilty for scribbling away over such a wonderful thing as a map! I soon got into the swing of it though and am very happy with the end result. I have several ideas brewing for more.
