Ciutadella cathedral in Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain.
Whilst on my travels in Menorca I visited Ciutadella, the old capital. It’s a beautiful city full of interesting architecture including this Cathedral. Taken mid morning in September, before the hustle and bustle and heat of the day really started going.
From Wikipedia: “The Cathedral Basilica of Menorca started construction in 1300 and was finished in 1362, creating a building of the “ogival art” style with the five sided apse is orientated to the east. After the desecration and devastation of the cathedral by the Turks under Barbarossa in 1558 and the collapse of the vaults of the apse in 1626, the damage was repaired in the original style. The cathedral was sacked and desecrated in the first days of the Spanish civil war in 1936 but was restored in its current form between 1939 and 1941.” Restoration work, as with many buildings of this kind, is ongoing.
